As reported by Reuters, record-low water levels in the Danube caused by extreme drought threaten nuclear generation in Hungary and Romania. Hungary’s prime minister warned that the Paks Nuclear Plant, which supplies nearly half of the nation’s electricity, faces a historic prolonged full shutdown for the first time in 44 years. Romania has also cut nuclear power output. Coupled with surging power demand amid summer heatwaves, the regional electricity deficit keeps widening. The disruption exposes vulnerabilities of conventional baseload power, pushing European nations to speed up energy diversification.
Parallel investment activity emerges in Southern Europe. On July 31, Macquarie Capital invested in Italian renewable developer Chiron Energy to form a joint venture. The platform targets at least 1GW of solar capacity paired with 500MW battery energy storage systems (BESS). Under its long-term roadmap, the consortium aims to operate 2GW solar and 1GW storage assets by 2035, with total investment reaching around EUR 2.5 billion.
